American Romcom: a musically codified genre
Commonly referred to as “Romcoms” in Hollywood and largely codified, American Romantic Comedies have used Music as a Central Character from the 1930's to today, setting the romantic tone, shaping the emotional rhythm, and strengthening the audience’s identification with the characters.
I imagined the album “American Romantic Comedies” by drawing inspiration from the three major eras of Romcom Music:
- 1980s / 1990s: The golden age of power ballads and romantic piano themes, often in an orchestral pop style (think "Pretty Woman" – James Newton Howard, "When Harry Met Sally" – Marc Shaiman, or "Notting Hill" – Trevor Jones).
- 2000s: The revival of a more independent cinema, scored with folk music or more introspective piano (Love Actually – Craig Armstrong, 500 Days of Summer – Rob Simonsen, or Juno – Mateo Messina).
- 2010–2020: Soundtracks sometimes infused with jazz, echoing the screwball comedies of the 1930s–40s and the intimate New York style (La La Land – Justin Hurwitz or A Rainy Day in New York – Woody Allen), leaning toward more minimalist, electronic, and understated approaches.
Derived from cinema, Romantic Comedies Music today accompanies not only films, but also television shows and advertising, creating a light and optimistic atmosphere while highlighting emotional moments with themes and motifs tied to encounters or reconciliations.
I hope you will listen to and enjoy this album, which I composed, recorded, and produced with passion and a keen attention to detail…
